Overview
Sustainable Concrete Research
This research project investigates the carbonation resistance of low-clinker cement systems, offering significant global warming potential reduction compared to traditional cement. As an Undergraduate Research Assistant in Prof. Nishant Garg's group at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, I conducted research focusing on cement paste specimens and their carbonation performance.
The research poster below showcases our findings on Limestone Calcined Clay Cements (LC3) and demonstrates how non-destructive X-Ray Computed Tomography can be used to evaluate the carbonation affected zone in concrete specimens.
Research Project
Reviewing the Carbonation Resistance of Low-Clinker Limestone Calcined Clay Cements
Key research aspects include:
- Analyzing sustainable concrete development with reduced cement content
- Investigating carbonation performance in low-clinker systems
- Applying non-destructive evaluation techniques for monitoring concrete deterioration
- Developing future directions for improving corrosion resistance in sustainable concrete
This research contributes to the development of more sustainable construction materials while maintaining or improving their performance characteristics. The project demonstrates how non-destructive imaging methods can provide valuable insights into concrete degradation mechanisms and help create more durable infrastructure with reduced environmental impact.
